Nadis and Their Functions: The Subtle Energy Channels of the Body

When we consider the body we often think about organs and blood vessels and nerves. However people who practice yoga from a time ago talk about a system that is not so easy to see. One that is about the flow of energy.

Have you ever felt a surge of energy when you are meditating or doing yoga?. Maybe you felt really calm and peaceful and it felt like it was all around you? These feelings might be more than something that happens for a moment. They could be connected to your nadis, the energy channels that go through your body.

These pathways are essential fоr allоwing prana, оr life fоrce, tо circulate within us, maintaining harmоny amоng оur mind, bоdy, and spirit․

We at Masi Wellness believe that learning about nadis helps you stay healthy both physically and spiritually. Nadis are like channels in our body. They help move energy. This keeps our body and mind in balance. Understanding nadis and how they work is important. It helps you take care of your health better. Nadis are really important for your well-being. They play a role in keeping you healthy.

What Are Nadis?

In Sanskrit the term “nadi” means flow or stream, and can be visualized as invisible rivers of energy that travel throughout your body, carrying the life force or prana within you to every cell, tissue and organ. According to ancient yogic texts, there are approximately 72,000 different nadis throughout your body. That’s right – 72,000! These channels make up an extremely complex interwoven system that connects your physical body with your subtle energy system.

While there may be many variations of energy channels (or “nadis”), there are three key nadis that play a larger role than the others – these are the Ida (moon/cooling energy), Pingala (sun/heating energy) and Sushumna (the middle channel for spiritual awakening). All three of the main nadis run through your spine, & correspond to the mental, emotional & spiritual aspects of who you are, via a flow of energy. Once you understand these key aspects of the three main nadis in relation to your body, you will be able to gain insight into how energy is flowing through you.

The Three Main Nadis and Their Functions

I) Ida Nadi: The Channel of Calm

Ida Nadi is linked to the moon. It represents energy and helps us relax. This channel starts on the side of our spine and goes up to the left nostril.

Function: Ida Nadi controls the part of our system that helps us rest, digest food and relax. When Ida Nadi is strong we feel calm and reflective. We might even feel a bit dreamy.

Imbalance: If Ida Nadi energy gets too strong we might feel lazy, not motivated or disconnected from our emotions.

II) Pingala Nadi: The Channel of Action

Pingala Nadi is connected to the sun. This means it is about energy and being active. It is also about warmth. The Pingala Nadi starts on the side of the base of your spine. It ends at the nostril.

Function: Pingala Nadi is to control the nervous system. This system is about taking action and being full of energy. It is also about being alert. When the Pingala Nadi is active you will feel energized. You will feel focused. You will feel ready to tackle challenges.

Imbalance: The Pingala Nadi can be out of balance. This happens when the Pingala Nadi is too active. When this happens you might feel stressed. You might feel anxious. You might feel burnt out.

III) Sushumna Nadi: The Central Pathway

Sushumna Nadi is really important. It goes up the middle of your spine. People often think of the Sushumna Nadi as a path that connects the bottom of your spine, which is the root chakra to the top of your head, which is the crown chakra.

Function: Sushumna Nadi is to carry the kundalini energy. This is a kind of energy that is sleeping at the bottom of your spine. When this energy wakes up it moves up the Sushumna Nadi. Helps you feel more aware and connected to your spirit.

Imbalance: If the Sushumna Nadi is blocked you might feel disconnected from things like you do not have a purpose or, like your spirit is not growing. The Sushumna Nadi blockages can result in feelings of disconnection, lack of purpose or spiritual stagnation.

How Do Nadis Affect Your Well-Being?

Your body is like a town with paths, some wide and some small, that lead to multiple directions. For things to move easily, ways must stay clear. Things do their jobs one part at a time. Everything moves more slowly and more slowly than it should because of a jam somewhere. It is similar with your inner energy. It’s like a network that flows when it’s free and pauses when it’s stuck. Moving effortlessly through the channels calms the body, clears the mind, and keeps the breath stable. Should blocks happen, tightness sets in, attitude turns dark, and energy drops. In balance, your body’s rhythms are smooth. In imbalance, you feel pain, fog, or unease. Once the flow starts up again, stress usually goes away on its own.

Here’s how nadis influence different aspects of your life:

Physical Health: Nadis are important for your health. They make sure that prana gets to every part of your body. This helps with things like digestion and circulation and immunity.

Mental Clarity: Mental clarity is also affected by nadis. When your nadis are balanced you can think clearly and make decisions and stay focused on things.

Emotional Balance: Nadis also affect your balance. If the energy within your body flows freely, you will be able to deal with the stress that is caused by life more easily. In order to do this, you must work through your feelings and have an optimistic view of life.

Spiritual Growth: Nadis also play an important role in your spiritual development. If you are attempting to deepen your meditative practices and tune into your true self (i.e. Higher Self), it is important to have your nadis clear; specifically, the Sushumna.

Fortunately, there is an abundance of methods for maintaining the optimal condition of your nadis. Some things you can do every day to improve your life are:
