In various personal and spiritual experiences, Angels are often given names which are peculiar to the particular branch of the mystic teachings from which they are derived. Some, however, speak of the three Departments or Hierarchies of Angels, each Department having its special place of work and mode of action. First, there is the highest Hierarchy, whose work is ever guided by the Divine Will; the second, that of the mediums and intermediaries, or the Angels of man; and the third, those who are the response to the call of man for guidance and assistance.
What Are Angels?
It is thought that angels emerge from pure spiritual essence formed by a higher power. Though lacking material shape, they appear in visible forms under certain conditions. Operating outside normal limits of time, their presence bridges two worlds. Light defines their nature in various belief systems, where warmth and insight flow through them.
It is believed by Doreen Virtue that angels remain near at all times, prepared to assist. Yet permission matters – help arrives solely if requested. Though present constantly, their actions depend on a personal invitation being given.
Types of Angels and Their Roles
Different spiritual traditions classify angels into various groups, but one widely accepted system divides them into three spheres or hierarchies. Each hierarchy has specific roles, with the highest serving divine will and the lower levels assisting humans.
First Hierarchy: The Closest to the Divine
These angels are the closest to the Divine, their work is to maintain the spiritual order of the universe.
- Seraphim are here to serve the purpose of spreading love and light and are messengers of the Divine. Their role is to praise God without ceasing.
- Cherubim – Wisdom protectors of sacred places and wisdom.
- Thrones: Their name means “those who sit” and are related to God’s judgment and order.
Second Hierarchy: The Divine Administrators
These highfallen angels are in charge of the Laws of the Universe and help to bring Balance and Harmony in creation.
- Dominions – These are the project managers of the lower angels, helping to organize and manage various functions and projects.
- Roles of Virtues: These beings of Soul perform the function of Miracles and Blessings. They bring good and God to people and situations.
- Powers are guardians of the world and/or the universe. They fight against negative energies and restore balance where it is lost in order to maintain order in the universe.
Third Hierarchy: The Closest to Humanity
These Angels are often considered the closest to humans, and are called upon to guide, protect and support us in our day to day lives.
These beings serve as overseers for very large groups of souls. Often they oversee an entire nation, or community, and guide the evolving spirituality of its members.
Archangels are the superstars of the angel world. Each has a specific role to fulfill.
- Michael Archangel: The protector. He gives his followers a feeling of confidence and security.
- Archangel Raphael: The healer. He can help with physical, emotional or/and spiritual healing.
- Archangel Gabriel – The messenger. His task is to help people to communicate – in any way, and to give guidance.
