What if the core of your being isn’t made of flesh or thought? Not the body, not feelings – something steady beneath them. A presence untouched by time. This part stays fixed while everything else shifts. It doesn’t shift with moods or age. Call it awareness that simply remains. Found when noise fades.
That is usually – Sat: Being, Chit: Awareness, Ananda: Joy.
These few terms may appear basic, but they contain the core of what it is to know the great truths that which we are and why we are here. In fact spirituality is in the doing, the feeling, the experiencing.
Let us explore this idea which we often discuss in a remote and academic sense, instead let us look at it in very personal terms.
Sat: Eternal Life.
In life everything is transitory. We grow and our thoughts pass by us and also the world we see is in a constant state of change. But in us there is a constant – a sense of “I am” that does not fade.
This “I am” is not defined by your name, your job, or your relationships. It’s the pure awareness of living, of just being. That which was present when you were a child, is present now, and which will still be present when all else decays.
Why does this matter?
When we connect with Sat we access a sense of stability and peace which is not based in external conditions. Life may be chaotic but at our core there is a peace that is constant.
Chit: The Spark of Awareness.
Chit is a term which is rendered as “conscience” or “awareness”. It is the light that enables us to think, to feel, and to experience. Without conscience the world would be a void of meaning, no color, no sound, no sense at all.
But in Chit we also look at the self the ability to reflect, to question and to know. We ask ourselves, “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?
Here’s the beautiful part:
Chit is beyond the mind. It is endless knowledge flowing through all of creation. When thoughts slow down, a sharper view opens up – wiser ways of seeing start to grow.
Ananda: The Joy of Being.
Ananda means out of joy or bliss. But this is not the transient happiness which we get from outside like fine food or a compliment. It is very deep and unshakeable joy which comes from just being.
In a park see a child which is totally absorbed in the moment. No past, no future, just pure joy in what is present. That is a picture of Ananda. It is the natural state of the soul which is free from worries, fears, and desires.
Why don’t we feel it all the time?
In the present we are so often lost in the mind’s noise, chasing what we think will bring us joy. But Ananda is not a goal to achieve; it is what we must uncover. It is within us all, waiting to be reconnected with.
The Interplay of Sat, Chit, Ananda
Sat, Chit, Ananda don’t stand alone; they are the three aspects of the same reality. See them as the three sides of a triangle each is integral to the whole.
Sat is a base. It is the permanent truth of who we are.
Chit is the light which we see in our lives. It is the intelligence that guides us.
Ananda is the joy that comes out of living in our true self.
Together they are the core of the soul, a perfect mix of stability, awareness and joy.
How to Live Sat, Chit, Ananda in everyday life?
You might be wondering, “This is all well and good, but how do I go about it?
It is simple, you don’t have to be a monk or a mystic to connect with your soul.
Here are some easy ways to include Sat, Chit, Ananda in your daily life:
i) Meditate Regularly
Sit quietly. Breathe without chasing ideas. That space between thoughts? It belongs to you. A short pause each day opens a door – stillness shows up as Sat, knowing hums through Chit, delight slips in like Ananda. Time spent here counts, even when nothing seems to happen.
ii) Practice Mindfulness
Pay attention to each moment – eating, walking, talking – as if nothing else exists. Being here brings quiet joy, the kind that feels like Ananda. Only then does life stop rushing.
iii) Let Go of Attachments
In many cases our suffering is a result of attachment to temporary possessions, relationships, even our own self image. When we let go of these ties we create space for the eternal joy of the soul to come forward.
iv) Serve Others
Through selfless service you may very quickly have a taste of what Ananda is. When you serve others out of pure love and not for any personal gain you connect with your true self.
v) Spend Time in Nature
Nature has a tendency to put us in touch with our core self. The peace of a mountain, the expanse of the sea, the beauty of a sunset all of which help us connect with Sat, Chit, Ananda.
A Journey Within
We can experience all life’s extremes; some people will know joy while others may suffer from pain; regardless how bad things may be it is possible to find some proportion of happiness and peace within an individual, and the happiness and peace will endure no matter what other life brings you.
By taking a moment; closing your eyes; breathing deeply into your body and allowing for stillness to exist; then for those with the right focus on their mind’s eye; once they begin recognizing the spirit; they will be amazed at how much closer they can actually feel to their spirit than many had thought possible.
