Our bodies are more than just flesh and bones – they’re also energetic beings. Ancient wisdom tells us that energy flows through specific points in the body known as chakras. When these energy centers are balanced and open, we feel aligned, healthy, and at peace. It may sound a bit mystical, but at its core it’s a beautifully simple idea that dates back centuries.
Consider Chakras as the invisible energy centers of your body, swirling wheels of life force that keep you humming away. These are not physical organs in the same way that your heart or lungs are, but rather energetic centers that affect how you feel - in body and mind.
Sometimes you feel emotionally off-balance, physically drained, or mentally scattered, even when everything in your life seems fine on the surface? Sometimes, the root of these issues lies deeper than we realize – in our energy centers, or chakras. These spinning wheels of energy within us play a vital role in our overall well-being, influencing everything from our physical health to our emotional and spiritual states.
So, what exactly are chakras? How do they influence our well-being? And what frequencies help keep them balanced? Let’s explore.
What Are Chakras?
The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word for “wheel” or “disk.” Think of them as spinning vortexes of energy located along the central channel of your body, from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Each chakra corresponds to specific physical, emotional, and spiritual functions. When these energy centers are balanced and open, we feel vibrant, healthy, and aligned. But when they’re blocked or out of sync, it can lead to discomfort, illness, or emotional turmoil.
There are many minor Chakras, but when people talk about Chakras, they usually mean the seven major ones that run along your spine, from the base all the way up to the crown of your head. Each Chakra has its own unique personality, location, color, frequency and role to play in your overall health.
1. Root Chakra (Muladhara): Your Foundation
Root Chakra is located in the base of the spine, is red in colour and has element of earth.
Think of this as your ‘grounding’ Chakra. It’s all about feeling secure, stable, and connected to the physical world. It’s your sense of belonging, your basic survival instincts, and your feeling of being rooted. When balanced, you feel safe, secure, and present in your body. If it’s imbalanced, you might feel anxious, insecure, or disconnected.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Security, survival, grounding, belonging, basic needs.
- Physical Connections: Feet, legs, bones, adrenal glands, colon.
- Frequencies: Lower frequencies, around 396 Hz. These grounding frequencies can help you feel more connected to the earth and secure.
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): The Seat of Creativity and Pleasure
Sacral chakra is located in the lower abdomen (just below belly button), is orange in colour and has an element of water.
This Chakra is your center of passion, creativity, and pleasure. It’s about your ability to experience joy, express yourself creatively, and embrace your sensuality. A balanced Sacral Chakra makes you feel passionate, vibrant, and open to life’s pleasures. An imbalance might show up as emotional instability, feeling uninspired, or lacking in joy.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Creativity, pleasure, sensuality, emotions, passion, joy.
- Physical Connections: Reproductive organs, bladder, kidneys, lower back.
- Frequencies: Slightly higher, around 417 Hz. These frequencies can support creativity and emotional well-being.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): Your Personal Powerhouse
Sacral chakra is located at the upper abdomen, in the stomach area, is yellow in colour and has element of fire.
This is your ‘power’ Chakra – your sense of self-esteem, willpower, and personal strength. It’s about taking action, feeling confident, and having a strong sense of self. When your Solar Plexus is shining, you feel empowered, confident, and have a healthy sense of self-respect. If it’s out of whack, you might struggle with low self-esteem, feel powerless, or be overly controlling.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Personal power, willpower, self-esteem, confidence, responsibility, autonomy.
- Physical Connections: Digestive system, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas.
- Frequencies: Around 528 Hz. Often associated with transformation and healing, these frequencies can empower your sense of self and willpower.
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata): The Center of Love and Compassion
Heart Chakra is located at the center of the chest, around the heart, is green in colour and has element of Air.
The Heart Chakra is all about love – not just romantic love, but unconditional love, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. It’s the bridge between the lower Chakras (physical) and the upper Chakras (spiritual). A balanced Heart Chakra allows you to give and receive love freely, feel compassion for yourself and others, and experience deep connection. An imbalance might manifest as difficulty in relationships, feeling isolated, or lacking in empathy.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Love, compassion, empathy, forgiveness, connection, peace, acceptance.
- Physical Connections: Heart, lungs, thymus gland, circulatory system, arms, hands.
- Frequencies: Around 639 Hz. These frequencies are linked to love, compassion, and harmonious relationships.
5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): Your Voice of Truth
Throat Chakra is located at the throat area, is blue in colour and has an element of sound/ether.
This Chakra is about communication, self-expression, and speaking your truth. It’s your ability to express yourself authentically, communicate effectively, and listen deeply. A balanced Throat Chakra allows you to speak your mind clearly and honestly, express your creativity through words, and truly listen to others. An imbalance might lead to difficulty expressing yourself, feeling unheard, or being overly talkative or very quiet.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Communication, self-expression, truth, creativity (through voice), listening, integrity.
- Physical Connections: Throat, neck, vocal cords, thyroid gland, ears.
- Frequencies: Around 741 Hz. These frequencies can support clear communication and self-expression.
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): Intuition and Insight
Third Eye Chakra is located at the forehead, between the eyebrows, is Indigo in colour and has an element of Light.
Often called the ‘seat of intuition’, the Third Eye Chakra is about your inner wisdom, intuition, insight, and psychic abilities. It’s your ability to see beyond the physical world, trust your inner guidance, and have a clear vision for your life. A balanced Third Eye Chakra enhances your intuition, clarity of thought, and inner wisdom. An imbalance might result in lack of focus, feeling disconnected from intuition, or being overly reliant on logic.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Intuition, insight, wisdom, imagination, psychic abilities, clarity, vision.
- Physical Connections: Brain, pituitary gland, pineal gland, eyes, nervous system.
- Frequencies: Around 852 Hz. These frequencies are believed to enhance intuition and spiritual insight.
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): Connection to the Divine
Crown Chakra is located on top of the head, is violet or white in colour and has element of thought.
The Crown Chakra is your connection to something bigger than yourself – the Divine, the Universe, or whatever you call your higher power. It’s about spiritual connection, enlightenment, unity, and pure consciousness. A balanced Crown Chakra brings a sense of peace, spiritual connection, and understanding. An imbalance might lead to feeling disconnected spiritually, feeling lost, or being overly materialistic.
- Psychological/Emotional Connections: Spiritual connection, unity, enlightenment, pure consciousness, faith, understanding, bliss.
- Physical Connections: Upper brain, pineal gland, nervous system.
- Frequencies: Even higher, around 963 Hz. These frequencies are associated with spiritual connection and enlightenment.
Simple Ways to Balance Your Chakras
Balancing your chakras doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few things you can try:
- Meditation: Spend a few minutes visualising each chakra, its colour, and imagine it spinning freely.
- Yoga: Do poses that target specific chakras, like Cobra Pose for the Heart Chakra or Tree Pose for the Root Chakra.
- Crystals: Use stones that match each chakra’s colour and energy.
- Sound Healing: Listen to Solfeggio Frequencies or try a singing bowl.
- Affirmations: Repeat positive statements that align with each chakra’s energy.
